Tucson Bird Count
2012 Spring Count: April 15 - May 15!

TBC Park Monitoring

Goal: Standardized monitoring of bird communities in parks, washes, and other areas of bird/birding interest.

What's Involved: A birder or group of birders with interest in a particular area adopts that area. The group spends 4 mornings a year birding the area, recording all species seen or heard. In addition, one or more people from the group conduct a series of point counts or transects during the morning. These counts are more finely spaced than the sites on Standard TBC Routes, and are standardized so that data can be compared over time. See the Park Monitoring Instructions for more details.

Current Park Sites:

Sites currently being monitored are shown on the map below.

Dates:

Parks are visited one morning during each of the following 4 periods:

Winter
Jan 15 - Feb 15
Spring Migration/Breeding
Apr 15 - May 15
Late Breeding
Jul 1 - Jul 31
Fall Migration
Sep 1 - Sep 30

Requirements:

Group Leaders:

  • Handle registration with TBC, park adoption, coordination of group members at survey time, and data entry.
  • Should only adopt areas that they can continue to monitor in future years.
  • Must meet the TBC qualifications outlined in the Self-Screening.

    Other Group Members

  • Only those conducting point counts must meet the TBC qualifications outlined in the Self-Screening.
  • Those conducting point counts should also be able to monitor in future years.

I'm interested. What now?

1. Pick a park...or other area that you'd like to monitor. It can be a neighborhood or city park, section of wash, "natural" park, or any other area you like to bird. Sites currently being monitored are shown on the map above. If a park you're interested in has been adopted (), you can contact that park's Group Leader about helping out, or adopt a park of your own.

2. Get a group of birders together...

who are interested in monitoring the area. The minimum group size depends on the size of the park: one person may be enough for smaller parks, more for larger ones.

3. Become familiar with the area...

if you aren't already (e.g., know what's accessible, make access arrangements if necessary).

4. Email us...

the area you'd like to adopt. We will work with you in planning the counts for your area. Each time your group surveys the area, you'll enter your data into the TBC database.

The TBC wants your feedback! Email Rachel McCaffrey at rachmcc@email.arizona.edu
